When Can a Puncture Be Repaired?

British Standard BS AU 159 sets out safe repair conditions. A repair is acceptable when:

  • The puncture is in the central three-quarters of the tread — not the shoulder or sidewall
  • The hole is 6mm or smaller in diameter
  • The tyre has not been driven on while flat
  • There is only one puncture — multiple repairs in the same tyre are not permitted
  • Tread depth is above 1.6mm

If all conditions are met, a proper mushroom plug repair is safe, long-lasting and costs from £25.

When You Need a New Tyre

  • Puncture in the sidewall or shoulder
  • Hole larger than 6mm
  • Tyre was driven on while flat, even briefly
  • Visible bulge, cracking or structural damage present
  • Tyre already has a previous repair
  • Tread at or below the 1.6mm legal minimum

Run-Flat Tyres: Usually Replace

Run-flat tyres that have been driven on while deflated generally cannot be safely repaired — internal structure may be compromised invisibly. Most manufacturers recommend replacement.

What About Tyre Sealant?

Foam sealant kits are a temporary emergency fix only. Sealant can contaminate the inside of the tyre, making a proper plug repair impossible. Always tell your technician if sealant has been used.
